Subject Overview

The Design and Technology curriculum at Oriel High School provides opportunities for students to develop their capability, through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to create quality products. This knowledge and understanding is taught specifically within Design and Technology lessons but crosses over closely with other curriculum areas such as Maths, Science, Business Studies, ICT and PDC. Design and Technology lessons also provide excellent opportunities for teamwork and for students to apply value judgments of an aesthetic, economic, moral, social, and technical nature in their designing and to existing products.

The Design and Technology department at Oriel High School consists of four members of teaching staff and three technicians. It is an incredibly well resourced department that boasts seven specialist Design and Technology rooms; three multimedia workshops, two Catering/Food Technology rooms, a dedicated computer suite and a Textiles room. There is also a heat room within the Resistant Materials area of the department where students can braze, solder, MIG weld and sand cast metal.

The department is affiliated with The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Whilst in Years 7, 8 and 9 students study Design and Technology for two periods a fortnight on a carousel system and work with many different materials and technologies across the different Design and Technology disciplines in Resistant and Compliant Materials. Each carousel lasts approximately twelve weeks in which time they will be set four pieces of homework, be assessed on their practical outcomes and an end of unit test. The table below is an example of what students will study at Key Stage 3.

Classes at Key Stage 3 never have more than twenty-one pupils in them, and are taught in mixed ability groups. Classes are taught by specialist teachers in that Design and Technology discipline and offer an insight as to what their particular discipline entails at Key Stage 4.


Key Stage 4 Curriculum

Students opt to study a Design and Technology subject at Key Stage 4 as a single option of five periods a fortnight. Students can opt to study any of the five strands of the curriculum offered at Oriel High School; Food Preparation and Nutrition, Textiles Technology, Graphic Products, Product Design and Systems and Control. Over forty percent of students pick a Design and Technology option as a GCSE at Oriel and Design and Technology still remains the most popular non-statutory GCSE option nationally.


Food Preparation and Nutrition (Compliant Materials)

Food preparation skills – these are intended to be integrated into the five sections:


1.       Food, nutrition and health

2.       Food science

3.       Food safety

4.       Food choice

5.       Food provenance

Controlled assessment in Year 10 is worth 15% of the GCSE. Tasks are set by the exam board.

Task 1: Food investigation

Focus: the working characteristics, functional and chemical properties of ingredients.

Practical investigations are a compulsory element of this task. Assessment is based on a written or electronic report (1,500–2,000 words) including photographic evidence of the practical investigation.

Year 11

Theoretical knowledge of food preparation and nutrition from Sections 1 to 5 above.

How it’s assessed

Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes

Multiple choice questions (20 marks)

Five questions each with a number of sub questions (80 marks)

50% of GCSE

Controlled assessment in Year 10 is worth 35% of the GCSE. Tasks are set by the exam board.

Task 2: Food preparation assessment

Focus; knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the planning, preparation, cooking, presentation of food and application of nutrition related to the chosen task.

Students will prepare, cook and present a final menu of three dishes within a single period of no more than three hours, planning in advance how this will be achieved.

Assessment base on a written or electronic portfolio including photographic evidence. Photographic evidence of the three final dishes must be included

All the other Design and Technology GCSEs are awarded by the AQA exam board and all follow the same format, 40% two hour single tier written exam and 60% controlled assessment. In Year 10 students build on their learning from Key Stage 3 and further their knowledge and understanding in their chosen discipline. The table below is an example of what students will study at Key Stage 4.

Key Stage 5 Curriculum

The  Design and Technology option at Oriel Sixth Form is Product Design (3D) which is taught over  eight periods a fortnight. Design and Technology A Levels are awarded by the AQA exam board and consist of four equally weighted units of 25%, two in Year 12 and two in Year 13.

In Year 12 and 13 students build on their learning from Key Stage 4 and further their knowledge and understanding on their chosen subject. The table below is an example of what students will study at Key Stage 5.

Product Design (3D)
AS Year 12 Unit 1PROD1 builds on the student’s knowledge and understanding from key stage 4 and covers the subject content required for AS and the two hour written exam.
Materials components and their application (timber, manufactured boards, laminates and veneers, metals, polymers, composites, smart and modern materials, compliant materials, adhesives).
Design development and history.
Design issues (environmental and sustainability issues, ergonomics and anthropometrics and consumer safety).
Processing materials and their manufacture (including health and safety and quality control).
AS Year 12 Unit 2PROD2 is a design and make unit where student’s knowledge of the AS subject content is applied to the design and making of three projects. The design folios and practical outcomes from the three projects are then submitted as the controlled assessment.

A2 Year 13 Unit 3PROD3 includes a synoptic assessment of the students understanding of the world of Design and Technology. The two hour essay style exam covers the following topics at A2
